  • I wonder what things would have been like if France fought like the Soviets. The tactics by Germany in each respective country was more-or-less the same. The only difference is France surrendered when things got bad whereas the Soviets treated the invasion as a person insult and would have rather died than loose.

  • Leadership and the Doctrine and War Plans set by the Leadership, was why France lost. Gamelin was a hopelessly, hopelessly incompetent general officer. Trying to move Blanchard's 1st Army into Holland - to extend your line by hundreds of miles and intentionally putting your mens' backs to the sea, can only be explained in terms of idiocy - or treason. He was tried for treason by Vichy France, and they were probably not far from the truth.

  • WW1 was not all the time static. The French used as first the combination of planes and tanks in 1918 to insure the rapid victory at the end of WW1. This tactic was imagined by Petain and Castelnau. However colonel Degaulle (wrongly promoted general by corrupted politicians) was disregarding aviation and just forgot in 1940 to step into action at Montcornet with his panzers in coordination with the planes of the French air forces. So Degaulle was considered as guilty by the French third republic government and had to flee to London at the 18th of June and serve Churchill ... But of course only at the radio !

  • Many comments are not objective about french troops. It must nevertheless, be taken on consideration, that in june 1940, France was alone in the face of troops far superior in number. The industrial hearth of the country was invaded, all our allies were beaten or anbandoned the fight . France was attaqued in the south by Italy and pro-nazi Spain was in a hesitant neutrality. The russians was now allied with the germans, public opinion is pro-german accros the Atlantic, and some leaders are openly pro-nazi. To continue the war in these conditions of isolation was really random.

    olivier Choletolivier CholetMánuði síðan
    • The British were still landing troops in Western France at the start of June to try and continue the fight and there were British units elsewhere under French command south of the Somme until the armistice. As an example, the ten thousand men of the 51st Highland division (that fought mostly to the last round and surrendered two hours after the neighbouring French units gave up the fight) at St Valery on the 12th of June would probably be offended if you say they abandoned the the fight.

Their choice to distribute 66% of their tanks to their infantry divisions resulted in their 3 dedicated tank divisions always being outnumbered by the 12 Panzer Divisions and Motorized Divisions who spearheaded Dunkirk and the Maginot Lines even though France and Britain had more tanks than Germany.

  • Still until today, I don't understand why france is treated as victorious nation. UK, yes. Russia, yes. USA, Yes. But France? Why not treating france in the same fashion like poland, Belgium, Bulgaria or Netherlands ? These nations got conquered and got liberated by other nation forces (yeah I know there were their own units as well, but yeah...) France even collaborated with vichy france. So why the difference?

    R MR MMánuði síðan
    • None of these nations acted better than France. UK retreated and abandoned the fight, only survived thanks to the channel sea. USSR fought along side Germany during the invasion of Poland and kept supplying Germany during the invasion of France. USA did nothing but providing supply, they only committed troops when Germany was already dead and saw that Europe might become Communist. I don't blame them, they did what they had to do in order to survive, like France. WW2 was an ugly time. But don't think France deserve less than UK/USA/USSR. They killed enough Tanks and Planes to avoid UK of being invaded and delaying the invasion of USSR, they did their part for victory.

All I'll change is this section where you said "outmanoeuvre" More accurate statement would be to say they concentrated their tank forces on a few selected points of the frontline (in an armoured spearhead) -> Where the French fought with their tank division widely dispersed over the whole of the front line and so where ever the Germans attack the French tanks and anti tank defences where overwhelmed

In autumn 1938, Germany lacked streght for breaking through the czechoslovakian defense lines and defend agains french attack from west at the same time. In 1938 it was more favorable position for Western allies than 1 year later. Germans were substantially weaker in 1938 and Czechoslovakia was a stronger opponent than Poland in 1939: Czechoslovakia 1938: 35 fully equipped and mobilised divisions in defense positions, light and heavy fortification along borders, most of the borders were hills and mountains. Poland 1939: 39 divisions, that were neither fully mobilised nor prepared in defense positions, no fortification, lowland terrain, threat from Soviet union.
