Nuclear energy creates an uneasy feeling of danger for many people: ancient and dangerous minerals are concentrated to awaken seemingly unnatural powers, creating toxic elements that, if they escape, can and have killed people in horrible ways. How many people has nuclear energy killed and how?

So tell me Kurzgesagt, how many nukes would it take to generate a resonance frequency that could destroy the earth?

  • I'd hope Kurzgesagt would give more attention to THE PRECAUTIONARY PRINCIPLE. "Apes with smart phones" should not gamble with things that have existential and catastrophic risks. Humans are obviously too irresponsible with such things. How about we actually consider safe, already available and scalable energy systems that have essentially no harm to humans or the environment? It'd give people meaningful and stable employment, and phase out hydrocarbons. WIn for everyone and every living thing on this planet. What about Wind and Concentrated Solar Power? How about we do the math to see how many people we could employ and how scalable such projects could be? How about an international "Manhattan Project" for sustainable energy? How many more Fukushimas have to irradiate the food supply before finally understand how dumb we are? Sorry, this is just dumb and disappointing from these creators. Man, even depressing.

  • A case can be made that solar and wind have a notable death toll. Like with what happened in Texas recently. About 20% of their grid relied on solar and wind which failed dramatically in the winter storm. It lead to the near week long outage for millions of people. Dozens and possibly more died from hypothermia and causes directly due to the sizable reliance on solar and wind. Countries like Germany have to fill gaps in energy with fossil fuels due to their heavier reliance on renewables. Would it be fair to not include those? Wind and solar was involved. If we include wildlife, wind and solar kill about a half a million birds annually. It cant be said that it's good for the environment if it's adversely affecting the local wildlife in a drastic way. The air pollution really is ridiculous, how come there has not been a solution to purify the air in some way to negate the pollution? That would be a more tempered solution while trying to find a viable alternative to fossil fuels.

    Manny NickManny Nick14 klukkustundum síðan
    • @Icyr0bin - While true that texas has a nonsensical power grid, saying it wouldn't have happened is a "what if". What if the idiots who designed the backup system for the fukushima plant didn't place the backup generators in the basement that was flooded due to a tsunami? There wouldn't have been a problem It's pointless to discuss these scenarios since human and design errors are always a factor. Fact is that people have been killed due to over reliance on renewables on a grid that couldn't take it and even with a decent power grid, a nation can't rely on more than 30-40% renewables with the current battery tech. And we need a source for the remaining 60-70%

      viktor1496viktor14967 klukkustundum síðan
    • also, the reason nobody is not clearing the air is because there’s no short term profit to be had, capitalism only thinks about money in the present and not consequences in the future finally, the small amount of birds being killed by wind turbines doesnt compare to the amount that will die from rising temperatures, hope this helped :)

      Icyr0bin -Icyr0bin -13 klukkustundum síðan
    • if texas just didn’t have their own special snowflake power grid and all of the US shared one electrical grid it wouldnt have happened also 20% is really small compared to the 80% other sources

  • Nuclear energy is so efficient that it produces not only energy for people but also concerns. I personally believe nuclear power is the most efficient, clean, and safe energy source for both nature and human beings. Solar powers needs to be installed where they can get much sunlight, where usually woods and forests are. Their panel also emits harmful toxic chemicals in production. Hydropower is already well-explained in this video, and wind power kills a lot of birds, massing up with the local ecosystem. With taking all these risks, most of the renewable energy sources are highly influenced by climate and its power generation rates are so fluctuative that a lot of machines and places are required to be taken until it can be our primary energy source, which is significantly inefficient considering further expenses such as management and environmental damage. I'm aware of the danger of the nuclear power, but at the same time, I'm aware of its efficiency, and believe our nuclear technology that has been developed for decades.

Japan evaced the entire area of a less severe event in 1/3 of the time that it took for the evac of Pripyat to even be ordered.

Say what you want, that's objectively horrible and ill prepared. How is it so difficult to get through your thick skull that the evac itself wasn't the problem. The fact that an evac wasn't even ordered or had been prepared until 36 hours after the accident, the fact that the people in pripyat weren't even told about the radiation leak....etc. That bud, is the problem. And you can't deny those facts.

Renewables (primarily solar and wind) are being built at an astounding rate, with no "mass destruction and poisoning" potential, making the nuclear argument less real every day. I would also not trust stats on nuclear deaths. The reporting parties involved generally have an interest in either inflating or minimizing them, but in any case, there is little transparency or accurate reporting of deaths and cancers, etc.

    Stephen ClaydonStephen Claydon2 dögum síðan
    • You ignore the realities of current fossil fuel usage and how a power grid operates. Battery tech has been stagnant for years with no improvement in the near future. Solar/wind can at most with current energy storage tech supply around 40% of a nations energy due to it being non-regulatable. So that begs the question, what should be used in the coming decades to supplement the remaining 60%? Seeing that air pollution from fossil fuels is the cause of 400.000 premature deaths A YEAR in Europe alone.... I know what I'd rather have sitting in my backyard.

More bikes in the hands of more countries, in a world of constant conflict, all but ensures repeats of the holocausts of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but on a much broader scale. I don’t see a way around it, because conflict and war seem to be so integral to the human condition.

  • Could we get a video on particle accelerators and what we could do with them, or a video on how we could use volcanoes as power courses?

  • I’m gonna be very stupid for a second plz don’t judge. Why don’t we use steam to power different things, like assign different ways of making energy to different needs for example let’s say we could just use solar power for our homes and if when we don’t have access to the sun due to like clouds we could use like a generator that we have stored that’s been charged by the solar panels yk.. I’m dumb for that nvm..
