  • My problem with removing the filibuster is that the senate is so skewed towards rural areas (now ideologically significant) that removing it means that republicans simply have an easier time passing shit than dems. We really need a second constitutional convention. The rot runs deep, and Democrats are by no means angels

  • For those wondering why Thurmond had his aide wait with that bucket, it's because a filibustering senator cannot leave the floor for any reason. So he ended up pissing into the bucket with one of his feet still on the Senate floor, which was only possible because Barry Goldwater asked Thurmond to yield a few moment to him so that he can relieve himself, which Thurmond did.

The Civil Rights Act was passed thanks to Lee Harvey Oswald blowing JFK's head apart - I shouldn't really need to explain that assassinating the President shouldn't be a prerequisite for civil rights.

  • To be fair, it's not that unusual for Ted Cruz to go wildly off topic during his filibuster. A filibuster, if done the traditional way with hours and hours of nonstop talking, would generally require the speaker to go off topic. While many speakers these days are capable of staying on topic for extended periods of time, most do eventually run out of things to say. Historically, it wasn't uncommon for speakers to read from law books, novels, cookbooks, or even phone books after they run out of things to say.

  • The filibuster is a political tool that cuts both ways so no one party is helped or hurt. But it also effectively prevents any real change from ever having a hope of coming to America, for better or for worse. And I do think it's for worse. B/c I may not know exactly how to fix America - few do - but Ik that how things are... isnt good enough. America can do better. Americans deserve better. End the filibuster, get change.

  • You guys have no idea what you are advocating for. You think they didn't have these same issues the entire time? You can't change the constitution because you don't get your way. And yes, it's always been that way is a good excuse because of constitution of our foundational document that carries this country forward. Not the democrats or Republicans. MOB RULE people, is exactly what all this defends against. Please think able everything our county stands for, the reason it take a filibuster is because unless it's supported by both parties, it can't be enacted. It's a safety, so you don't rush into Obama cares and dangerous policies most of the country is against

    Dr MartinDr MartinMánuði síðan
    • What the hell are you talking about? First off, the ACA, or Obamacare, is overwhelmingly popular. The constitution can and has been changed before, they're called amendments. You are free to disagree with getting rid of the filibuster, but to say it couldn't be done is wrong.

  • If they have to physically stand and speak, and maintain a rotation doing so, and keep their members on the floor, then I favor the filibuster. That cannot be done indefinitely, nor on every single issue. I am not saying it would be great, but the filibuster is actually a rule for the closure of debate. If a large enough minority can maintain the physical presence for a real filibuster, let them explain to their constituents why every bit of business needs to come to a halt over this one issue. Some wouldn't get punished, but others would.

  • Congress is trying to run a Coup right now. It is full of Communists. Radical Left loons who are trying to destroy the fabric of society. They filibuster anything that is going to help the people right now because they are trying to hurt the President. They are also trying to push bills that will weaken America and destroy the Republic. Which is what Oliver is trying to do here, weaken the Republic by suggesting the last line of defence for the Republic is some sort of outdated method. The founders understood human beings and corruption. They understood that radicals could In fact pack Congress and it sought to protect the people by creating this last line of defence. Surely people know that Socialists, social justice warriors, Marxists, Communism etc is totalitarian and in no way supportive of small government and protecting the rights and freedoms of all. Be careful what you wish for. Oliver knows what he is doing when he spreads this Communist propaganda. It is up to you to seek unbiased information. It is ok to listen to this bullshit to see the agenda they are trying to push, but be aware, yhese Oligarcs don't care about you, they are trying to destroy your rights and the only way they can do it is to make you believe that the systems protecting your rights are a bad thing.

Democrats are just Republicans in a cheaper suit. In real socialism, pretty much all of the entire government would be taken outside and shot, probably by Putin personally.

    drstevenreydrstevenrey2 mánuðum síðan
    • Well a lot of it stems from Republican and right wing propaganda, which attempts to scare their consumer base into resisting change. That being said, there are fundamental differences between Democrats and Republicans, especially now. Also, Russia isn't a socialist government, I would call it maybe an oligarchy or a dictatorship, honestly it takes from both. Socialism isn't bad. There is, of course, a legitimate debate to be had about the practical effects of both it and capitalism, but irrationally fearing it is pretty inane.

    • I mean it's not corruption. Biden was arguably the most moderate candidate of the bunch, and appealed to the widest sect of voters. It's really just math: there are more "moderate" democrats than there are "liberal" democrats, and it makes sense that the primary would swing that way. Biden was the favorite going into the primaries, and was expected to win from the begining. While I personally disagree with some of his policy positions, he is a fundamentally decent guy. He seems like a great option for the way the country is now, and is a lot more likely to draw forth a unifying coalition than Sanders and other more liberal democrats may have. And honestly they could give us a capuchin monkey in lederhosen and it would still be a better option than Trump.
