  • Glass behaves much like a liquid (it does indeed flow slowly in centuries old windows) the impact causes a high speed wave that ripples out, around, and meets up at a single point on the opposite side. This causes a concussion that cracks the glass. It’s kind of like an earthquake or a tsunami: those don’t go though the Earth, they ripple concentrically along the surface. *geology rocks

  • My guess on the damage to the other side of the ball comes from the shockwave from the bullet impact being able to spread out in the first half of the ball as the diameter increases. This puts the energy in a range that the glass can handle without breaking. As the shockwave travels through the second half the diameter is decreasing so the energy is being concentrated into a smaller and smaller point until it's more than the glass can handle so it breaks. The 5.56 put more energy in the shockwave than the glass could handle so it cracked the glass as it went through the first half. Each time it cracked it released a lot of energy so what eventually made it to the other side wasn't enough to crack the back. Could be wrong but that's my guess

  • I think the hole on the other side is from the shock running through it, as the energy is transferred through the ball it goes around and through it, finally meeting on the other side where there's nowhere for it to go, causing the surface to crack. I'm no expert but that's my intuition, if you want to figure it out exactly you could look into the stress tensor for a sphere but that's not quite as satisfactory or easy to understand as an intuitive explanation.

  • I would field a guess that the shockwaves from the impact are shaped and contained by the sphere shape. It seems like they would refocus the same way the light moves through the sphere/prism and cause the surface to burst outward. But I’m just a carpenter, what do I know?😂

    soinhu foitusoinhu foitu8 klukkustundum síðan
  • The best way I can think to illustrate the cracks on the opposite side would be imagine a Newton's Cradle and the moving ball in the end is a bullet. The most dense of energy from the impact travels through the center and then opposite end of the sphere to the 3rd ball which is nothing but air in this case.

  • The weird effect is the shock wave bouncing off the back of the ball. Its the same principles as how seismologists can locate earthquakes from the other side of the planet. The vibrations travel through the Earth itself as well as around the surface..

  • the ball disintegrated your breathing very fine powdered glass it will float in the air for a while very dangerous bit like fiberglass and asbestos . as for the glass splitting in the opposite side is a transfer of kinetic energy similar to those balls you get on desks where you drop 1 and the ball on the other side goes up it transfers the energy through the ball to the other side

  • so i'm not a physicist or anything but my hypothesis is that when you hit the ball with you bullet, it creats a shockwave that travels all around the ball and when it reaches on the other side and, it colapse on itself creating force going outside and inside, and that crack on the back could be the force going inside
