(From "Sour Grapes") Pig knuckle, braised soft White tablecloth, skewered squab Smile like El Gato, chilled gazpacho Greens tossed Extra virgin sits on top the sauce I'm boss' boss Did it my way Hit the highway to rob, some took a loss And came hat in hand Eyeing a seat at the table but I let 'em stand Selfish Butter poached shellfish The charred flesh of the helpless Scoop marrow from bone I can only imagine those loans have grown Like the mortgage on your aspirational home Liens leaning on your ceiling, the beams groan You got a lot on your dome I eat like Noreaga, vomit crusted on the throne Blood run out the prime rib Student debt the next ship to sink like that subprime shit did

  • Not a black dude myself, but some of those bars ring true and sharp just being poor in this country. Getting that letter saying you've been declined and all you can do is laugh because you are *fucked.* I can only imagine how much worse it could be, how much darker it can get out there, and what can I even do? Listen, mainly, and not be an asshole. But even setting that aside, Billy Woods is really in a league of his own as a poet and rapper, but not exactly the most straightforward, and I've got to give Feefo mad props for really stepping outside his comfort zone here and seriously engaging with his work. To me, that's so much more valuable in a reviewer than just sharing my opinions on something.

  • I feel like anyone who’s lived poor and miserable for an extended amount of time can probably really connect with Woods in general. He does touch on a lot of very black-specific problems, but all the shit about insurance and bills haunting you forever til you finally can’t do anything other than laugh to dull the pain of it all, that shit makes *_perfect_* sense to a white dude like me who grew up *right* next to Skid Row and almost wound up there himself. Almost 75% of the entire population of this damned country lives paycheck-to-paycheck, after all. I’ve been a fan for a while but I swear Billy just gets better and better with time, the man *_cannot_* make bad music.

  • the theme of the album is the past and not being able to hide from or escape from it. ppl from the past coming by to visit, going back to his childhood home, all of Red Dust, feefos point about the skit about bills still being there even if you dont forward your mail, and drug addicts returning to old habits. “dont tell me thats the past, i live in the past, it aint even that different”

  • “2nd place is steak knives” is a glengarry glen ross quote. 1st place is a cadillac el dorado, 3rd place is youre fired. “you dont wanna be in 4th place, man” (how did nobody have Red Dust as their favorite track??)

    • "knock the plane out the sky, spark the genocide, lets see who gives who a place to hide you may be surprised (you might not!)" dude this fucking line gives me chills every time i hear it, for those not aware its a refernce to the Rwandan genocide, when president Habiryamana's plane was shot down by an unknown group of people, killing everyone on board. This sparked a genocide against the Tutsi minority, along with Hutu moderates and the pigmy Twa tribe. The line "lets see who gives who a place to hide" is a reference to people trying to hide in churches during the genocide, only to be turned over to Hutu hardliners and killed raw as fuck
