Biblical Series I: Introduction to the Idea of God

Lecture I in my Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories series from May 16th at Isabel Bader Theatre in Toronto. In this lecture, I describe what I consider to be the idea of God, which is at least partly the notion of sovereignty and power, divorced from any concrete sovereign or particular, individual person of power. I also suggest that God, as Father, is something akin to the spirit or pattern inherent in the human hierarchy of authority, which is based in turn on the dominance hierarchies characterizing animals.

Sorry my Christian brothers but the Quran is way more significant in today’s era. Which is why Islam was the 3rd monotheistic religion to be introduced to this world.

  • Religion is inherently a bad thing. When you have a group of people who are doing good ONLY because a book written by men told them they would get everlasting life after death if they do, you can't actually tell who is evil. Without religion all the truly evil people would make themselves known. Another horrible thing about religion is the indoctrination of children by parents. Never have I been more confused as a child than when I was being told all these "facts" at weekly religious school classes. I respect the people who don't need religion to tell them how to live and I pity people that do.

  • I loved the fact that Dr. Peterson had the humility and honesty to say that he may not yet completely understand the entire message of the Bible and that there may be some more precious truths that are yet to be discovered as we dig more into it. Some sort of a progressive truth. And so there is no shame in admitting that 'We don't completely know" or that "We don't know YET" in as much as the Bible is concerned. As brilliant as he is, he didn't act all high and mighty and had that sense of dignity and confidence to say that there are things that he doesn't know. And that's truly striking and remarkable for me.

  • I think you control your thoughts. But of course we know it’s not like you get to choose from a list of thoughts choosing one in the moment, no we choose our thoughts in the act of your conscience making a decision about the thought that comes up. And your body recommends thoughts like ISpast does videos based on those decisions. Based on if you like/dislike that thought (in way more complicated ways than literally liking or disliking them obviously).

  • Jordan is a very intelligent man. But he's basing his theory off a bunch of Lies. When the school board was confronted with 25 lies based on Evolution and age of the Earth. They said they prefer the word misrepresentation they don't want to call them lies. We were never monkeys. All things lead to chaos. So there's no such thing as evolution. And there hasn't been billions of years it's physically impossible.

  • The Judaeo-Christian God puts foreskin on the end of every penis, starting with Adam. Many generations later, God sees fit to reveal to Abraham that he and his descent have to amputate that foreskin from every male child when it is 8 days old. God says nothing to Abraham (or Moses) about hygienic precautions or possible infections. In the late 19th century, this Jewish peculiarity spreads to middle class English speaking families, despite the fact that this minor but very painful surgery is carried out without any form of anesthesia. Ireland never had a bar of the bald penis. Routine infant circumcision is gone from New Zealand and almost gone from the UK. The rate has declined to 6% / 30% / 25% in Australia / Canada / USA west of Denver. Only in the USA east of Denver is the bald penis still normative.

  • Why do alot of religious people react defensively and anger to someone who just has a hard time believing in a God? Where does the being humble and loving come in? Do you think Jesus would react that way ? I thought christians were supposed to at least try to model Jesus behavior and authentically I might add. Religion seems to be a club to be a part of with nothing more then social gatherings and patting each other's backs on how good you are for labeling yourselves as christians, playing house.

  • i've been very depressed and anxious because of the lockdowns, i've felt frozen and i catch myself negatively meditating on my mortality almost daily (which is only a slight improvement from what was a constant and draining nihilism that i am still struggling with). luckily at the moment i find purpose in whatever work i can scrounge up while i otherwise sit around and do nothing. it's the sitting around doing nothing *completely alone* that makes it feel like life has no meaning. i've been struggling to find ways to connect with others because my lack of a schedule has caused my sleeping clock to be irregular and i tend to be up past the witching hour most nights. i just want to know why i'm here and why it has to end. the whole mortality thing makes life at its most unbearable seem utterly pointless. it's not that i don't have anything to live for it's that i don't see what impact it makes. i used to be very narcissistic in nature but coming to grips with mortality especially when all the news was 'x person has died' on a ticker at all hours made me realize how short time is, i'm 29 but i simultaneously feel like a teenager and a 90 year old just waiting for the last breath to leave my body. i'm just scared man

Mankind has turned that natural food and made it cheaper and devalue the nutritional value of the food into preservatives and refined food that is now made to make you fatter, sicker, and shorten your life span. I always wondered why these atheists food industry business men wanted to refine natural food that is good for you. It is also fascinating that it states in the Holy Bible the exact food that we were supposed to eat and the foods that were considered unholy.

The point is that God is everywhere and it has always been a mystery to mankind but his foot prints are everywhere and maybe he dont have a shadow like the rest of us. His shadow is just pure light and we just can't see this true light because we just don't know life like him.

  • Sir, You are not saved are you. That is a Born Again Christian. If you were you would not be fooled by the scam the devil played on Adam and Eve. Jesus said what it's about a couple of times. One in what is called "The Lords Prayer" the other just before he was arrested. He said Our Father who is in Heaven, Hollowed be Your name, God is in Heaven and His name is Holly. God kingdom come "your will be done" on earth as in Heaven. That is the point God will be done in my life. Not my will in guiding my life. You surely not saved, what you are have trouble with is Christianity 101. The devil told Eve that they would know all like God if they just went against God and take a bite. I believe you are causing my Friend to stumble and may Jesus open your eyes to the truth so to help you understand and I will flag my friend to you. May God Bless your listeners , Morgan 💡777🎸

  • Here is a genuine question to Mr. Jordan Peterson or whoever feels qualified to answer in line with his ideas. I've been listening to his "Maps of Meaning" lectures, where he took a look at Noah's story, where the main takeaway point was something along the lines of "if you are oriented properly with the world (walk with god in the language of the Bible), you will be able to save yourself, your family and probably the whole world when the next crisis inevitably comes. A few lectures prior to that he looked at Pinocchio story, where the main moral was quite similar, but in my opinion the Pinocchio story is significantly stronger and more sophisticated (with the protagonist developing during the story rather than being introduced as being righteous). I might argue that, say, the Tower of Babel story is the same as Metropolis. The question is, haven't all the most important and relevant ideas of the Bible been absorbed by the modern culture thus making the book obsolete?
