The True Geordie Podcast is back with True Geordie's boyhood hero Alan Shearer. The striker played for Southampton, Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United and the England national team. Shearer was signed for a world record fee of £15 Million in 1996 and is Newcastle's and the Premier League's record goalscorer. He was named Football Writers' Association Player of the Year in 1994 and won the PFA Player of the Year award in 1995. In 1996, he was third in the FIFA World Player of the Year awards. In 2004 Shearer was named by Pelé in the FIFA 100 list of the world's greatest living players. Shearer scored 283 league goals in his career, including a record 260 in the Premier League with a record 11 Premier League hat-tricks, and a total of 422 in all competitions including international at all levels. Until his retirement from international football in 2000, he appeared 63 times for his country and scored 30 goals. Today he tells his story to True Geordie and Laurence McKenna.

  • Great interview -thanks. It wasn't Sir Bobby who "discovered" Ronaldo - that was legendary Brazil winger Jairzinho. Still, being Bobby Robson's first choice for Barcelona over Ronaldo must have been a great feeling for Alan Shearer. Sir Bobby though - he certainly managed his fair share of brilliant centre forwards - Shearer, Ronaldo, Romario...

  • He’s bang on about the way it was back in the 80’s and 90’s with the apprentice players. Cleaning the boots, dressing rooms, stands etc gave them a grounding and a respect for hard work. Too many young players now are millionaires by 20 years old. Where’s your motivation then?? Ok some young players don’t care about the money and want to be the best player they can be but too many don’t.

  • It annoys me how geordies slightly alter there accent once they’re famous, everyone I know from Newcastle ‘proper geordies’ don’t speak like shearer

    Lemons44Lemons444 mánuðum síðan
    • @Lemons44 Your first sentence was a giveaway: "It annoys me how geordies slightly alter there accent...." Personally, it annoys me more to hear Brits using Americanisms like 'figured" than it does to hear differences in accent. When people call me "Bud" or "Bro" in a Geordie, Yorkshire, Lancashire or Cockney accent, I find that more annoying than the already ubiquitous "mate" or"pal" from people I've never met or can't be bothered to use my name. And don't get me on about "awesome".... As for Scousers, Cockneys and other accents that you didn't grow up listening to, there will be tons of them who do what you claim happens only with Geordies. It's just that your ears are less finely attuned than they are to your own accent, that's all. Most Scousers and Yorkshireman can't tell the difference between a Tyneside and a Wearside accent, and most outsiders wouldn't know the difference between say a Sheffield and a Doncaster accent. To be honest, even the True Geordie himself sometimes "waters down" his accent.... but he doesn't quite lapse into "Gazzoid or Waddlesque RP Geordie", and neither, to my ear, does Alan Shearer.

      twangbarflytwangbarfly23 dögum síðan
    • @twangbarfly I don’t see how you figured I was upset ? I don’t alter my accent when speaking to foreigners, if they can’t understand me they don’t have to speak to me.. I wouldn’t change how I speak so someone could understand me but that’s just me. I don’t hear many scousers, cockneys etc altering their accent in the slightest which is why I’m confused as to why geordies do seeing as scousers, cockneys have very strong accents like us geordies.

      Lemons44Lemons4423 dögum síðan
    • @Lemons44 That's you. Do you speak the language of many of the countries you travel to? Do you speak a lot of English to foreign speakers? Are you in situations where you realise that people can't follow your full-on regional accent? If so, what do you do? There's different levels of accent. Considering his punditry work, I don't think Shearer's accent is outlandish. I'm prepared to bet that after a spell in your home region, your accent becomes far more regionally marked than it was before you got back. Same if you mingle with people from your region when you are in some other place. That's just how it is - no point in getting upset.

      twangbarflytwangbarfly24 dögum síðan
    • @twangbarfly I travel a lot and have stayed in different countries for years and my accent hasn’t changed one bit, one of the hardest accents to change is the geordie accent, I know plenty of people who have lived in other countries like Australia etc. For 10+ years and there accent hasn’t changed in the slightest, he’s totally altering his accent and you can tell, same with Steve Bruce, willne, Cheryl Cole, all of them

      Lemons44Lemons4424 dögum síðan
    • That's probably because you 've never lived anywhere else.... if you move away from where you're brought up, your accent is almost bound to change... it's not about being a "snob" Except for Sting of course :-)
