England, 1884 - a world on the brink of change. On the morning of her 16th birthday, Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown) wakes to find that her mother (Helena Bonham Carter) has disappeared, leaving behind an odd assortment of gifts but no apparent clue as to where she’s gone or why. After a free-spirited childhood, Enola suddenly finds herself under the care of her brothers Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and Mycroft (Sam Claflin), both set on sending her away to a finishing school for “proper” young ladies. Refusing to follow their wishes, Enola escapes to search for her mother in London. But when her journey finds her entangled in a mystery surrounding a young runaway Lord (Louis Partridge), Enola becomes a super-sleuth in her own right, outwitting her famous brother as she unravels a conspiracy that threatens to set back the course of history. Based on the beloved book series by Nancy Springer, ENOLA HOLMES is a dynamic new mystery-adventure that introduces the world’s greatest detective to his fiercest competition yet: his teenage sister. The game is afoot.

  • I felt they suggested that Sherlock has yet to start working with Dr Watson, for example when Enola states she works with Sherlock it is stated that Sherlock doesn't work with anybody, this may be due to this movie being set earlyish in his career, I haven't read the books so I am not sure at what point the good Dr shows up but it would be interesting to see as with the BBC Sherlock, a watson that can take on all the holmes' all three of them.

  • Fact: Sherlock stated on multiple occasions in the books that Mycroft possessed superior deductive skills to his own. That Mycroft merely lacked the energy to follow through on deductions but was overall better a better detective, something neither Sherlock nor Mycroft really cared for since jealousy was not in their nature. The way the movie depicts Mycroft has absolutely nothing in common with the book and is not just a loose interpretation. It's simply a different character.

  • The film shortened Sherlock’s progression from sexist and insisting that Enola be brought up ‘properly’ to fully accepting her choices, partly by taking out most of his sexist lines in the beginning. It wouldn’t make sense if it took a whole film series for him to accept her independence in this version, but it would be nice, if less dramatic, to see them working together more.

  • has anybody cracked the code from the newspaper themselves (1)? or the encrypted text on Enola's cipher wheel (2) or even the page with the Playfair message _[gift opening scene - the page behind the cipher wheel]_ (3)? I tried option *2, but I can't seem to get it... I'm wondering if it's even crackable, but I'm also wondering if there's a keyword they have to make deciphering it trickier... I was just curious as to how Enola and her mother used their cipher. From my understanding, when using a cipher, the party members that wish to understand encrypted messages, have to know either what's known as a shift key or index in order to crack the code. Caesar Cipher wheels usually just utilize letters, as opposed to numbers... A theory I had, regarding why Enola's wheel has the numbers and letters majorly covered up, is so that someone who happens to see the device wouldn't initially be able to figure out the format of the inner wheel, perhaps. Personally, I find it harder to solve something with them covered up. Also, the other thing I noticed is in one of the B-Roll shots, Enola, I think mistakenly, moved both the inner and outer circles? I thought just the inner wheel was supposed to move. Thus, does this mean they weren't actually using the device properly, filming its usage to give the illusion that she was decrypting the code from Sherlock? Ofc I read into this a lot lol, but I was just curious. Also, there's a Caesar Cipher Wheel that they allow to be downloaded - part of a pack with numerous challenges to complete with friends in London. But, that's just with letters - no numerical values like in the film. playathome-uk.escapehunt.com/products/an-enola-holmes-adventure * and apparently Sherlock's deceiving newspaper ad is a substitutional cipher - I wish to know how it works if anybody could be so kind as to help me out? :')

  • The savage part about Sherlock Holmes is that, despite all the hard-work and near death experience her sister gone through to investigate and get all the facts about marquess case and her mother intention. Sherlock did that for both case by just reading newspaper, deduce two clues from his mother room, 1 interview and even give the "shark" tips to Enola that help her solve the marquess case.

  • I enjoyed Enola Holmes very much. Thanks for this. One addition--near the end, when Enola and Eudoria reunite briefly, Eudoria is wearing a jacket with pansies. In the language of love, pansies (according to google) mean admiration of another. That seems meaningful--as mother spoke to the daughter through flowers. I look forward to more of these films.

How will they ever avoid being overshadowed by young Millie's performances? I hope that her acting ability does not end up leading to a difficult adult life, as it has for so many who have achieved fame and fortune at a young age. May she be as wise as she is talented.

And she didn't even find her mother nor did she found what her plans were, Not saying Elona isn't smart or a detective it was just bad movie writing. Just so predictable 😑 Hopefully the next movie is better 👍
